Week 20 of Year 3 "With the Pharisees - Part 2"

Menu

For adult study: "With the Pharisees - Part 2"

The story summary and questions were written in a way that makes it possible to use a New Testament reference in place of the Urantia reference. A selected chapter from a 1932 book, titled Treasure-House of the Living Religions, supports a spiritual theme that is found within the story. Children will use a one page handout that includes a coloring picture.

Paper 167:1
The Urantia Book

Inviting those who could not repay you

Students may read Paper 167:1

Jesus went to the home of a Pharisee for a meal on the Sabbath. After everyone sat down, several things happened. First, Jesus healed a man with dropsy. Then, Jesus told a story about taking the lowest place at the table rather than the seat of honor. And finally, Jesus spoke about inviting people to a dinner. He said, “But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind.” Remember those who cannot return your generosity.

Discussion Questions
Talk about what it means to be selfish and unselfish. Jesus wants us to do good to others without thought of what we will get in return. He said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” What are some examples of giving without receiving?

Chapter 20—Unselfishness—p.105

"Without cherishing any selfish motive,

by looking on every creature in my light,

by patience and dispassion, by honoring the great,

by having compassion on the poor,

by celebrating my name, by the practice of sincerity,

by the companionship of the good,

and by the renunciation of pride

a person hath his heart purified entirely."  (Hinduism)

Let no one be for ever seeking his own good ;

but let each seek that of his fellow-man.  (Christianity)
