Week 26 of Year 1 "The New Commandment"

For adult study: "The New Commandment"

The story summary and questions were written in a way that makes it possible to use a New Testament reference in place of the Urantia reference. A selected chapter from a 1932 book, Treasure-House of the Living Religions, supports a spiritual theme that is found within the story. Children will use a one page handout that includes a coloring picture.

The Urantia Book

Love one another even as I have loved you

Students may read Paper 180:1.1-4 or all of sections 0-1

On the evening of the Last Supper, Jesus spoke to his disciples about love. He said, “Love one another, even as I have loved you,” and “By this will all men know that you are my disciples.” He went on to say that if they keep this new commandment, they will experience new joy and friendship with him. The disciples knew how much Jesus valued love and service. And now they heard him say, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.”

Discussion Questions

People often wear something that identifies their religion. Can you think of some examples? What truly identifies Jesus’ disciples? Jesus wants us to love one another in a new and higher way. How would you define love?

Re: Fatherly Love

140:5.15 ... He rather admonished his apostles to love men as he had loved them—to love with a fatherly as well as a brotherly affection.

140:5.21 ... “Greater love has no man than to lay down his life for his friends.” And a fatherly love can freely do all these things—things which brotherly love can hardly encompass. ... "
