Week 16 of Year 5 "Forbid Him Not"

Menu

For adult study: "Forbid Him Not"

The story summary and questions were written in a way that makes it possible to use a New Testament reference in place of the Urantia reference. A selected chapter from a 1932 book, Treasure-House of the Living Religions, supports a spiritual theme that is found within the story. Children will use a one page handout that includes a coloring picture.

Paper 159:2
The Urantia Book

He does not follow us

Students may read Paper 159:2.1 or entire section

One day, the apostle John came to Jesus with what he believed was disturbing news. He said that an unknown man was teaching and casting out devils in Jesus’ name. John forbade him to do it. When Jesus heard about this he said, “Forbid him not.” Jesus explained to John that people who claim to do great works in his name will not likely speak against him. He said, “He who is not against us is for us.” Jesus was aware that his teachings would spread in ways such as this.

Discussion Questions

Why was John disturbed by this stranger? Jesus knew his disciples would need to be tolerant of others in the years to come. Jesus also mentioned a cup of water. How is the gospel message like a cup of refreshing water for our souls?

Re: Unity

182:1.8 ... In the spiritual fellowship of the believer-son with the divine Father there can never be doctrinal finality and sectarian superiority of group consciousness.

195:10.14 ... But in this brotherhood of Jesus there is no place for sectarian rivalry, group bitterness, nor assertions of moral superiority and spiritual infallibility.
