Week 17 of Year 5 "Martha and Mary"

Menu

For adult study: "Martha and Mary"

The story summary and questions were written in a way that makes it possible to use a New Testament reference in place of the Urantia reference. A selected chapter from a 1932 book, Treasure-House of the Living Religions, supports a spiritual theme that is found within the story. Children will use a one page handout that includes a coloring picture.

Paper 162:8
The Urantia Book

My sister has left me to serve alone

Students may read Paper 162:8
Martha and Mary were sisters who lived in the town of Bethany with their brother Lazarus. One day, Jesus was a guest in their home. Mary chose to sit and listen to him teach. Martha, however, kept working at the serving tasks. She became upset that Mary wasn’t helping her. When she complained to Jesus he said, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
Discussion Questions

It is good to help with the tasks that need to be done. But sometimes people get too busy with unnecessary tasks and other distractions. Examples? Jesus reminds us to make time for the greater things of life. What are the greater things?

Re: Seek first the kingdom

140:6.13 ... Seek first the kingdom of God, and when you have found entrance thereto, all things needful shall be added to you. Be not, therefore, unduly anxious for the morrow. Sufficient for the day is the trouble thereof.”

156:5.12 ... Believers must increasingly learn how to step aside from the rush of life—escape the harassments of material existence—while they refresh the soul, inspire the mind, and renew the spirit by worshipful communion.
