Week 2 of Year 1 "The Poor in Spirit"

Menu

For adult study: "The Poor in Spirit"

The story summary and questions were written in a way that makes it possible to use a New Testament reference in place of the Urantia reference. A selected chapter from a 1932 book, titled Treasure-House of the Living Religions, supports a spiritual theme that is found within the story. Children will use a one page handout that includes a coloring picture.

Paper 140:3.2-11
The Urantia Book

For theirs are the treasures of the kingdom of heaven

Students may read Paper 140:3.2-11

The disciples followed Jesus up a high hill one very special day. When they arrived at their destination, Jesus spoke to them about faith. He said, “Happy are the poor in spirit, for theirs are the treasures of the kingdom of heaven.” Those who are poor in spirit know that they need God. They are humble, and they want to learn from God. We also see this written as, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” This teaching is the first of eight Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount.

Discussion Questions

Sometimes we go about our lives as if we had no need of God. Why do we forget to depend on God? What are some experiences that cause us to remember that we need God every day? We can trust God and depend on God.

Re: Humility

158:8.1 ... “Verily, verily, I say to you, except you turn about and become more like this child, you will make little progress in the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever shall humble himself and become as this little one, the same shall become greatest in the kingdom of heaven. ...

167:1.5 ... Forget not, every one who exalts himself shall be humbled, while he who truly humbles himself shall be exalted.
