Week 27 of Year 1 "Garden of Gethsemane"

Menu

For adult study: "Garden of Gethsemane"

The story summary and questions were written in a way that makes it possible to use a New Testament reference in place of the Urantia reference. A selected chapter from a 1932 book, titled Treasure-House of the Living Religions, supports a spiritual theme that is found within the story. Children will use a one page handout that includes a coloring picture.

Paper 182:3
The Urantia Book

My soul is exceedingly sorrowful

Students may read Paper 182:3.1-4 or entire section

After the Last Supper on Thursday night, Jesus went with three disciples to the garden of Gethsemane. They saw that he was very sorrowful. Jesus asked the disciples to stay awake with him while he went a short distance away to pray. But they could not stay awake. Jesus prayed three times for assurance. He prayed, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” Jesus endured great anguish, and an angel came to strengthen him.

Discussion Questions

Why did Jesus want the three disciples to “watch and pray” with him? What was the “cup” that Jesus spoke of? Do you have questions or thoughts about the Father’s will in what was about to happen to Jesus?

Re: Self-dedication

136:5.2  Jesus decided that he would not utilize a single personality of this vast assemblage unless it should become evident that this was his Father’s will. ...

136:9.4 ... He discerned that God’s way was not going to be the easy way. He began to realize that the cup of the remainder of his human experience might possibly be bitter, but he decided to drink it.
