Week 28 of Year 3 "Women at the Cross"

Menu

For adult study: "Women at the Cross"

The story summary and questions were written in a way that makes it possible to use a New Testament reference in place of the Urantia reference. A selected chapter from a 1932 book, titled Treasure-House of the Living Religions, supports a spiritual theme that is found within the story. Children will use a one page handout that includes a coloring picture.

Paper 187:3
The Urantia Book

Near the cross of Jesus

Students may read Paper 187:3.1-2 or entire section
Many people saw what happened during the crucifixion. A group of women believers kept watch while Jesus died upon the cross. In sorrow, they saw how he was mocked by strangers, soldiers, and even by the religious rulers. They heard him say, “I thirst.” They saw his concern for his mother when he placed her under the care of his apostle John. The women beheld his great suffering, which he accepted with steadfast courage. The women were there when he died.
Discussion Questions
People can be courageous in many different ways. How was Jesus courageous during the last day of his life? How were the women courageous? We can remember a Psalm that says, “Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart.”

Re: Courage

187:1.7  These women of Jerusalem were indeed courageous to manifest sympathy for Jesus, for it was strictly against the law to show friendly feelings for one who was being led forth to crucifixion. ...

127:5.6 ... and she stood “among the other women” by the side of Mary on that fateful and tragic afternoon when the Son of Man hung upon the cross, to her, as well as to countless worlds on high, “the one altogether lovely and the greatest among ten thousand.”

Chapter 23—Fearlessness and Courage—p.122

The Lord is the strength of my life.
Of whom shall I be afraid?
Though an host should encamp against me,

My heart shall not fear.

Wait on the Lord. Be of good courage.
And He shall strengthen thine heart.  (Judaism)

Wisdom, benevolence and fortitude—
these are the universal virtues of all.  (Confucianism)
