Week 28 of Year 4 "The Thief on the Cross"

Menu

For adult study: "The Thief on the Cross"

The story summary and questions were written in a way that makes it possible to use a New Testament reference in place of the Urantia reference. A selected chapter from a 1932 book, titled Treasure-House of the Living Religions, supports a spiritual theme that is found within the story. Children will use a one page handout that includes a coloring picture.

Paper 187:4
The Urantia Book

Lord, remember me

Students may read Paper 187:4.1-6 or entire section

Two thieves were crucified on crosses to the right and left of Jesus. One of the thieves taunted Jesus saying, “Save yourself and us!” But the second thief rebuked the first one saying, “Do you not even fear God?” He knew the two of them had done wrong, but Jesus had done nothing wrong. Then, he turned to Jesus and said,  “‘Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Discussion Questions

Even during the agony of the crucifixion, Jesus listened to a convicted thief who acknowledged his crime and honestly repented. What do you think caused the second thief to repent? In your own words, what did he ask of Jesus?

Chapter 11—Confession and Repentance—p.47

Those who, when they do a crime or wrong themselves,

remember God and ask forgiveness for their sins,

and do not persevere in what they did, the while they know,—

these have their reward, pardon from their Lord.  (Islam)

The religion of the Wise One takes away the bonds of sin

from him who makes confession of it.  (Zoroastrianism)
