Week 14 of Year 1 "Journey to Bethlehem"

Menu

For adult study: "Journey to Bethlehem"

The story summary and questions were written in a way that makes it possible to use a New Testament reference in place of the Urantia reference. A selected chapter from a 1932 book, Treasure-House of the Living Religions, supports a spiritual theme that is found within the story.
Children will use a one page handout that includes a coloring picture.

Paper 122:7
The Urantia Book

A decree went out from Caesar Augustus

Students may read Paper 122:7.2-6 or entire section

Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth, which was part of the Roman Empire. One day, “A decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.” When Joseph heard about this, he knew what he had to do. He needed to travel to his family town of Bethlehem and add his name to the tax rolls of the empire. Mary went with Joseph even though her baby was due any day. We can picture Joseph leading a donkey, which Mary rode all the way to Bethlehem.

Discussion Questions

Joseph and Mary’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem took several days. What might have been difficult about the journey? Also, they faced a problem when they arrived in  Bethlehem. How can people be happy even when life is difficult?

Chapter 31—Happiness and Joy—p.160

The virtuous man is happy in this world.
And he is happy in the next. He is happy in both.
He is happy when he thinks of the good he has done.
He is still more happy when going on the good path.  (Buddhism)

Subdue yourself; for, the self is difficult to subdue.
If your self is subdued,
You will be happy in this world and in the next.  (Jainism)
