Week 9 of Year 3 "Parable of the Leaven"

Menu

For adult study: "Parable of the Leaven"

The story summary and questions were written in a way that makes it possible to use a New Testament reference in place of the Urantia reference. A selected chapter from a 1932 book, titled Treasure-House of the Living Religions, supports a spiritual theme that is found within the story. Children will use a one page handout that includes a coloring picture.

Paper 151:4.3
The Urantia Book

The kingdom of heaven

Students may read Paper 151:4.3

Many people came to hear Jesus teach by the sea. Jesus sat in a boat while the people listened on the shore. On that day, Jesus tried to help his followers understand more about the kingdom of heaven. So, he told them a parable about leaven, which is another name for yeast. He said, “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven,” which a woman placed into some flour when making bread. Jesus knew the people understood how to make bread and the helpfulness of leaven.

Discussion Questions

What does leaven do for a loaf of bread? Can you explain why the kingdom of heaven is like leaven? We can think of the kingdom as the indwelling spirit of God. Remember that Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within you.”

Re: The Inner Kingdom

140:1.3  “The power of this kingdom shall consist, not in the strength of armies nor in the might of riches, but rather in the glory of the divine spirit that shall come to teach the minds and rule the hearts of the reborn citizens of this heavenly kingdom, the sons of God. ...

195:10.4  “The kingdom of God is within you” was probably the greatest pronouncement Jesus ever made, next to the declaration that his Father is a living and loving spirit.
