Extra Lesson "The Temple Tax"

For adult study:
"The Temple Tax"

The story summary and questions were written in a way that makes it possible to use a New Testament reference in place of the Urantia reference. A selected chapter from a 1932 book, titled Treasure-House of the Living Religions, supports a spiritual theme that is found within the story. Children will use a one page handout that includes a coloring picture.

Paper 157:1
The Urantia Book

Does not your Master pay the temple tax?

Students may read Paper 157:1
Temple tax collectors made sure that every man paid a half shekel for the temple in Jerusalem. One day, a collector asked Peter, “Does not your Master pay the temple tax?” Peter answered yes he pays. So, Peter went to Jesus and they talked about it. Since they were near the Sea of Galilee, Jesus advised Peter to go fishing in order to pay the temple tax for them. This story became known as the “miracle of the coin in the fish’s mouth” and was recorded in the gospel of Matthew.
Discussion Questions
Do you have questions or comments about the story? Jesus knew they should pay the tax rather than give his enemies a reason to accuse him of wrongdoing. Sometimes people say, “Pick your battles wisely.” How does that apply here?
