Week 6 of Year 1 "The Friend at Midnight"

Menu

For adult study: "The Friend at Midnight"

The story summary and questions were written in a way that makes it possible to use a New Testament reference in place of the Urantia reference. A selected chapter from a 1932 book, Treasure-House of the Living Religions, supports a spiritual theme that is found within the story. Children will use a one page handout that includes a coloring picture.

Friend, lend me three loaves

Students may read Paper 144:2.3

Jesus told a story about a man who went to his neighbor’s house at midnight to ask for three loaves of bread. “A friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him.” The neighbor at first refused, but because of the man’s persistence, he got up out of bed and gave him the loaves. Jesus told this story to encourage his disciples to persist in prayer and to seek God’s will. He said, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.”

Discussion Questions

What are some things that people pray for? People also pray, “Your will be done.” We need to trust that God’s will is wise and good. When we read this story, we should remember that God is different from the neighbor. In what way?
